President-Elect Barack Obama

November 5th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I’m still wiping the tears from my eyes right now. Everything from Obama’s grandmother casting her ballot and passing away just one day before Obama was elected President of the United States to my black friend telling his son that he could be President one day, too, has brought me to tears tonight. My Ex thinks I’m a sap, I’m sure, but I don’t care. It’s amazing!

Gavin has been running around the apartment all night shouting “Barack Obahhhhhma wins!” and is eagerly planning his “Barack Obama Party” for tomorrow (hey, I gotta find a way to bribe the kid to go to bed…!). I’ve been anxiously drinking wine, biting my nails as the results came in. But, in the end, they came in the right way.

It’s a wonderful and historic moment for our country and I’m so excited for what tomorrow brings!

LANDSLIDE victory! I couldn’t believe it! I’m so proud of our generation for getting out there and voting in record numbers. I teared up too-and when I hear the replaying of his speech, I get choked up again. This is a huge moment in history for our country. I’m so glad we get to be a part of it!

First of all, record numbers? Really? The preliminary numbers show the youth turnout at about 18%. It was 17% in 2004. Yawn.

Second of all, landslide? Really? This was probably the third closest election of the last 30 years. This is like a doctor seeing someone with a temperature of 104 degrees and saying “well, he’s dead.” Uh, wanna dig a little deeper, doc?

Instead of looking at the electoral numbers, why don’t you take a look at the margin of victory in swing states. Obama’s margin of victory (or defeat) in FL/OH/MO/NC/IN/VA was < 3% in all but OH, which was 5% (with 4% still unreported). That means if you flip the McCain loss states by 2.5%, you’ve got 260 electoral votes for McCain. When you can affect the results that much by such a narrow flip in votes, you’ve hardly got a landslide.

If you want to look at popular vote, we can do that too. Obama’s margin of victory was 6% (with some still to report). Of the presidential elections since 1900 (28 elections), exactly 7 have had a smaller margin of victory than this one. So you’re saying that 75% of the presidential elections since 1900 have been landslides? That seems a bit of a low hurdle, from where I stand.

Sometimes I wonder if people have forgotten that we are supposed to be the “United” States. I too am thrilled that Barack Obama won and would hope that the other side would be as gracious as McCain (I know his last speech was written for him…) in congratulating Obama’s victory. Could we stop the booing and the name calling now?
