In honor of the fact that I typically spend 60 – 80 hours per week in front of a computer, I have decided to take advantage of the Thanksgiving holiday (and some much needed PTO) by putting myself on an email diet.
This is no small feat, considering that I have not one, not two, but three email accounts synced on my phone. As part of my diet, I have allowed myself to masochistically look at the number of emails accumulating, unread, in each mailbox; however, I have not allowed myself to read any of the messages. So far, I have made it four days.
I briefly considered going on a complete internet-free diet, but realized cold turkey might not be for me – especially since G asks me roughly 100 times a day to unlock my phone for him (on a slow day, that is). And, if I’m being completely honest, I don’t think my body would be able to handle quitting Angry Birds without notice. I imagine I’d start flinging birds in my sleep. Not a good situation.
Overall, though, I am pleased with the email diet so far. I have been reading more, playing games with G, and feeling less compulsive now that I am not constantly refreshing my inbox. If it goes well, I may consider taking regular breaks from now on.
Have you put yourself on an email or internet diet? How did it go?
