I'm not sure how this will affect any potty training efforts however. I'd also keep a playpen temporarily setup in his room to put him in to sleep as a punishment if he keeps getting out of bed. He'll learn that if he wants to sleep in his big boy bed he'll have to stay in it, otherwise it's the playpen for him.
